Comment on In ruling against Planet Fitness, Michigan court concludes trans women aren’t women in ~lgbt
varieker Oh yeah, this was really recent (in the last year at most). I was dreading it becoming national news and the media freaking out about how the "transgenders are pedophiles". But no, thankfully....Oh yeah, this was really recent (in the last year at most). I was dreading it becoming national news and the media freaking out about how the "transgenders are pedophiles". And, yeah it definitely is important to bring up that all trans people aren't a monolith. The same way women aren't a monolith, the same way people of color aren't a monolith, the same was Muslims aren't a monolith, etc...

I heard about Tildes two days ago on Reddit when people were talking about how the ad/profit incentive means that Reddit leaves a whole bunch of undesirable content on their site. Someone mentioned r/Tildes and I had a look, read the announcement and I was hooked. Solid concept.

Comment on Is there a net benefit to social media? in ~talk
varieker I'm not a huge fan of social media in general, but one of it's good uses is connecting people from around the world. I'm here in NZ where the population is approx. five people and I have best...I personally don't see any benefits to social media. I don't care to keep in touch with most people from my past. I don't really care about their lives, apart from wishing them well.

I'm here in NZ where the population is approx. five people and I have best friends from all over the world (in the US, Canada, and in the Netherlands). I use Facebook to keep up with these people (mainly because they can't be bothered finding more privacy-centric platforms, but meh). It's not ideal, obviously but it does the job for now. I'll take it, at least up until I can convince them to get something better.

Comment on 'Nanette' Isn't a Comedy Show. It's a Sledgehammer. Hannah Gadsby reflects on her groundbreaking Netflix special. in ~lgbt
varieker I watched this just last night. It was... hoo boy. I cried during most of it. Her telling the audience what it's like to be closeted in a completely hostile environment was pretty damn relatable....I watched this just last night. It was... hoo boy. I cried during most of it. If there's one comedy show I could force my friends to watch, it'd be this one hands down.

But this kind of sentiment is missing the entire point: even if there were cases of trans women abusing people in bathrooms, we aren't a monolith. We can (and should) simultaneously oppose the actions of an individual (who happens to be part of a group) without demonizing that entire group.
I came out as a trans to my best friend of six years. First thing he said to me was "I always KNEW you were a girl!" and then he gave me the biggest hug ever.
I've never loved a guy more than I have at that moment <3
