What have you been watching / reading this week? (Anime/Manga)
What have you been watching and reading this week? You don't need to give us a whole essay if you don't want to, but please write something! Feel free to talk about something you saw that was cool, something that was bad, ask for recommendations, or anything else you can think of.
If you want to, feel free to find the thing you're talking about and link to its pages on Anilist, MAL, or any other database you use!
I finally started watching Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. The visuals are all spectacular; I really like the designs for the characters and mobile suits and they look incredible while in motion.
The only problem is that the story doesn’t seem to actual be going anywhere. There is lots of intrigue but it’s not clear what the point of anything is.
Angel's Egg. It was a powerful film for me, during the late nights when I watched it. It's dreamlike, gloomy, often quiet and desolate, yet often tense. Incredible how much understanding you can get from the visuals, and it's famous for its lack of dialogue.
Depending where your mental state is, it could be the worst choice to watch during the holidays, or the perfect match for the holidays.
I'm not sure if it has a good ending or a bad ending. It seems up to interpretation.
A fantastic companion article (with spoilers, but maybe for this kind of film it doesn't matter?) is https://www.animeherald.com/2022/09/03/the-opaque-masterpiece-angels-egg/
The author's personal experience mixed together with Angel's Egg and it felt like his definition of reality became fluid and difficult to grasp, during a stressful week dealing with childbirth and family.
I agree. I've seen some complaints about the CGI but honestly I think it's used excellently. In my opinion the anime is not only true to the manga, it's a very good adaptation: it captures the atmosphere and the characters really well. That being said, I'm also considering re-reading the manga when the anime ends...
