Uzumaki finally has a release date: September 28!

I've seen a lot of people worrying that the lack of news about it meant there were production issues or it might be canceled, but I've always held the position that the team was just taking their time. The early interviews and articles just showed reverence from the production staff, and a determination to emulate Ito's art style as closely as possible. And part of what makes his stories so scary is the sheer detail in the art, which consequently makes it harder to animate.

Based on this teaser, looks like I was right to be optimistic! The animation looks terrific, it already looks to be the best adaptation of Ito's art style. I can't wait to see it!

Had no idea what this was, came in with way too much Naruto baggage in my head (even tho I knew Uzumaki is not a Naruto thing specifically at all), am now scarred for life. Please advise ☺️.

Yes this is for sure content that you don't want to experience without being familiar. FWIW, Uzumaki is what I would consider one of Junji Ito's more subdued works. 😬

I advise watching more Naruto to try to help reinforce that Uzumaki in your head and ignoring this Uzumaki if you don't want to develop a fear of spirals. Good luck xD

Or y'know... jump all the way in and develop fears of several new things (like sleeping, grease, and human shaped holes) πŸ˜ƒ

I hope this leads to more animations of his work. I would especially like to see one for Shiver.

There are some other anthology adaptations, and so far the quality is... Not the best, depending on who you ask. The amount of detail in his artwork, which is a HUGE factor in how scary his stories are (seriously, I got a jumpscare just from a man grimacing, I've never seen such visceral hatred in a still drawing) makes adapting it to animation VERY hard. I recall an early interview about Uzumaki mentioned they didn't expect future adaptations to try to emulate his art style as strongly due to the amount of work needed for it.

Actually, looks like Shiver IS one of the adapted works. It's episode 4 of the Junji Ito Collection.
