For those who don’t read Japanese, the tweet releases a new PV and announces that the show will be 4 cours long - that’s up to 52 episodes, a whole year of weekly SAO! The first episode is also announced to be a 1 hour special!
Having read the LNs for the Alicization arc I’m pretty hyped that we’re getting this amount of time. 4 cours should be enough that they can compress the parts that need less time and can give the really great moments the space they deserve.
I'm excited for this. I haven't gotten around to reading the Alicization arc but I'm a big of SAO in general. Alicization is supposed to be the best of what SAO has to offer.
So where is the anime? I saw it when there were two seasons and a movie. How far behind am I? The first season was really fresh in my opinion. I am not huge into anime, but a friend is and told me to watch it, and I liked it.
You're up to date (assuming by movie you mean Ordinal Scale), this new season starts airing in October.
That would have to be it. If I am up to date already I'll most likely watch this new stuff. Not sure what cour means? Does that mean something or meant to be hour?
I think it's French, it roughly means "season" and generally 12 episodes = 1 cour, iirc.
Thanks.
Two seasons as in you’ve watched up to Mother’s Rosario arc? That should be 49 episodes, 25 from S1 which covers Aincrad and Fairy Dance as well as 24 from GGO and Mother’s Rosario. If you’ve watched up to MR as well as Ordinal Scale you’re actually up to date anime wise. The recent Sword Art Online Alternative anime is a spin off and doesn’t have plot relevance to the main series. Alicization being animated was actually first teased at the end of Ordinal Scale!
Edit: Oh, didn’t realise someone else had already responded, whoops. Just gonna leave it here because I spent the time writing it already.
Ah thats kind of a let down it's a spin off.
I'm watching through the second season now as part of a group discussion. Probably won't stick around for Alicization since I'm just not a fan of the writing, even if the concept is something I'm into.
I think it’s worth trying to pick up Alicization at least, the writing does change in tone a fair bit and you can tell that Kawahara really starts to get where he wants to be with SAO in this arc. If you’re not a fan of it up to now I think you might be pleasantly surprised, though I’m not sure what about they writing you’re disinterested in.
