This week in Anime: week 41 of 2018
Here goes for the first instance for what I'm intending as a weekly thread, the principle is simple:
How do?
Since we're currently lacking native spoiler tags, I'd ask all of you to follow this scheme:
Post a top level comment with the title and episode number of the anime you want to talk about like this
**JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo - Episode 1**
Then reply to those top level comments with your thoughts. This way people who haven't seen something yet or plan on binge watching once all the episodes are out can simply collapase the top level comment to not get spoiled ^.^
What do?
Simply post, discuss or joke about any currently airing anime you want. For Anime you've been watching that aren't currently airing refer to @Cleb's weekly thread
When do?
But what if the anime I want to talk about hasn't aired yet?
No problem, just post a comment here once the episode has aired, these threads aren't meant to last one single day.
Archive
Going forward, I'll maintain archives of these threads at the unofficial wiki set up by @kat
Goblin Slayer - Episode 1
Thanks to @SleepingPanda for recommending this in the other weekly thread! I was impressed by the first episode and daresay it could stand on its own as a short film.
I like how it begins with all the completely generic fantasy MMO guild/quest/town setup and cute girl to lull you into a familiar mindset, even boredom before it really begins. Once things get going, it reminds me of a mix of Record of Lodoss War and Berserk, both series where every action in every battle carries tremendous weight. (Incidentally that's one thing that's continued to stick out to me watching Darling in the FRANXX, where there are big flashy fights with lasers and explosions that end up feeling quite hollow.)
Ultimately the first episode is great in execution, not in the mind-blowing way, but viscerally. Every clank, thud, and splat leaves an impact. (Except the gasoline! That was a nice touch.)
I was debating giving this a shot, but I've heard it has a terrible rape scene because edgelord weebos keep memeing it or otherwise mentioning it. Is it being overblown? A one-off thing, or what?
That scene is there to emphasize the hopelessness of the situation. It plays into the tone for the story's setting where "these creatures are more terrifying than they initially seem, and this kind of horrible stuff is ever present in this story's universe," as well as indicating it's not a children's story. Although some might argue it's there purely for shock value and could be deleted, I wouldn't say it was gratuitously overdone, and episode 2 tones everything down quite a bit.
That said, if someone has a zero-tolerance policy for that type of content, then I'd tell them to stay away from Goblin Slayer.
Yeah, it's something I stay away from. Perhaps once it's gotten further along I'll give it a shot if they don't do so again in the series.
Zombieland Saga - Episode 2
I'm really growing on this so far, it's stupid and it knows it. And the animation is honestly pretty decent considering there really isn't that much going on.
I also like how the personalities of the girls are now starting to come more clearly into view. And how much they seem to be clearly poking fun at the kind of 'archetypes' you'd find in other Idol anime (the childish small girl, the older refined girl, the troublemaker, the shy one etc.)
Goblin Slayer - Episode 2
After all the controversy from last week's first episode, we've finally gotten some more understanding of the serious tone of this show. I think there aren't many folks who'll like this MC as he's one for little words and doesn't stand out. From the post-credits scene, it looks like the supporting cast will be the real personality of the show. Looking forward to episode 3!
I actually find the MC pretty funny since he constantly wears armor in inappropriate situations. It's a good contrast from a lot of contemporary shows where characters talk too much.
Just watched this! I'm curious to see where it goes if all he's interested in is continuing to kill goblins. Especially if (from the OP music video) there are more members of the party who probably have other goals. I guess his childhood friend may play a large role in the future.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Vento Aureo - Episode 2
I have a hate/love relationship with Jojo. The buildups are great and I have a weird heterosexual attraction for those burly, strong men :P, but that's about it. It doesn't help that I can't remember anything about it after watching.
I'll watch this anyway, of course.
I haven't managed to finish Stardust Crusaders yet. But the men in this part are far less burly, they're still muscular and let me tell you that it's on display, but they're not built like tanks any more.
Hey man, I'm super straight, but Jojo is Jojo lol
I'll have to check this out.
The ending is surprisingly chill, sounds like something I'd listen to on the bus.
Good execution during the fights, but the problems that are there in the manga remain. I love JoJo, but so many of the powers, especially in part 5, are just stupid and make fights feel weird and awkward. I also hate JoJo's trend of pointless backstory dump and for some reason the anime decided to really put a lot in the first 2 episodes. Hopefully the pace picks up soon.
That Time I was Reincarnated as a Slime - Episode 1
I had a lot of fun watching it, since I'm pretty picky about animes. Looks cute, and it was also pretty funny. The protagonist's dying request (not a spoiler since it's the title of the anime) was pretty funny.
I gotta say, I was pretty skeptical about this one. But the Tsundere dragon won me over.
I binge-read the manga after watching the first two, it stays pretty consistently good. One anime trope I dislike, but otherwise fine.
