Suggestions for meta animes?
I really really enjoyed 'Danshi Koukousei no nichijou'. In particular anything-goes hijinx parts, and nice lore.
I also enjoyed metahumor from Saekano and Monogatari, but they lean in their respective category more than comedy part.
Monogatari is a bit heavy and needs attention, so I'm looking for something light and humorous. I don't much enjoy fan service/lewdness unless it serves the purpose of the story or as comic relief.
Any suggestions welcome!
Probably the best 'meta' animes I've seen would be "Nichijou" and "Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan". I'm not sure if they could be considered meta, but I would also recommend "Hinamatsuri" and "Mob Psycho 100".
Also, in the same vein as 'Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou', check out 'Azumanga Daioh'.
There's also Gintama, but it's a bit of an acquired taste.
Seconding Saiki K (and Nichijou, for that matter). Saiki K is my favorite anime, and in my mind, its only flaw is that I can't recommend it to anime-newcomers since it leans heavily on subverting anime tropes. It's certainly the sort of anime you appreciate more for having watched other anime.
Nichijou is also excellent and could be aptly summarized as "light and humorous".
Thank you!
Mob Psycho was pretty good. Gintama is in my list, but it has enough episodes to that it will have to wait till Christmas.
But others seem approachable for me (no. of episode wise).
The first season of One Punch Man is very meta, but unfortunately the second season kinda loses a lot of its parody aspects, and so sadly felt a lot more like just a standard Shonen.
I will also second @tesseractcat's recommendation of Gintama, which is quite funny, and also very meta all throughout. Not only does it have a ton of fourth-wall breaking, but it also features a lot of meta commentary and criticism of typical anime themes, format, tropes, etc. Unfortunately it also frequently has references and jokes that went completely over my head, forcing me to go hunting for answers in the middle of episodes, which was kinda frustrating and took away some of my enjoyment of it. And it's also incredibly, incredibly long, which leads to it getting pretty stale eventually, especially because of how dragged out the story arcs get. I think I finally lost interest somewhere around episode 200 or so, but will probably go back and try to finish it off one day.
If you can handle the low quality CGI look, Tesagure! Bukatsumono and its sequels is great. Very meta, self-aware and funny. Check out this opening (enable subtitles) so you can get the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2NHwqqaGpU
I just watched the intro and it is hilarious! Definitely watching this one!
That intro is really funny! But would you recommend the show even to people, like myself, who are typically not fans of school/teen drama focused anime? Or would a lot of the parody aspects be lost on me as a result of how unfamiliar I am with the genre?
I first watched Danshi Koukou when the only anime's I had watched were Death Note and FMA. I still laughed my ass off.
Granted, when I eventually rewatched it last week, it was way funnier because I had more familiarity, but I'm still not very familiar with mainstream highschool anime's.I've only ever watched Danshi Koukou till end.
It parodies many genres of anime, it's funnier the most anime you have watched but give it a shot for sure!
