Heavens River is very much a different story told, both in scope and style. I'm very happy if've know that before I've read it, because if you go into it expecting more of the same, you will be dissapointed. That isn't to say it's bad. Just differend. (Also don't worry, I'll keep this free of spoilers.)
It has some slow parts towards the end, but overall it's still a good story. Although much more contained, both in scope and consequences. It mostly follows a single Bob, only sometimes jumping to a secondary or tertiary one, but all directly connected to the main story.
It also sets up some interesting (potential) future conflict that was already brewing during the first trilogy.
All in all I'd recommend it, just be aware that it will be a different story (but with the same Bobs).
Without giving too many spoilers, it went in a rather different direction, but I still really liked book 4. Kinda focused in to a small band of merry adventurers as compared to the previous books...

The original trilogy still feels complete to me, even after reading 4. A few thoughts (I read the whole series last week, so it's fresh):
It is longer, easily 2-3x the length of the original trilogy books.
The majority of the book takes place in a single setting. There's a lot less Cool Space Shit, much more civilization porn similar to the Deltan arc.
It's a growing pains kind of book. Seems to me like the author didn't plan out anything past the original trilogy, but it's too successful to just abandon the series (especially to Audible, I think). So he's trying to build a new foundation for more ongoing books. It went OK.
if you liked the original 3, you'll enjoy most of book 4. If 5 turns out great, it'll be worth it.
I loved book 4 personally. Books 1-3 told a complete story, but left plenty of room for further development of the world and characters. Book 4 shrinks the scope down a bit and puts bob in a new...

Books 1-3 told a complete story, but left plenty of room for further development of the world and characters.
Book 4 shrinks the scope down a bit and puts bob in a new situation while maintaining the same charm, same fun, and same general style as the first 3.
Personally, I think it was a brilliant decision. If it had been too similar to the first 3, I think the author would have been beating a dead horse. 3 books was the right amount for that particular plot.
Anyway, all four books are funny, light, and super easy to blow through in a weekend. They're hard to put down and easy to pick back up. I think they are the best example of a book that should be experienced through audio too, because Ray Porter tells that story like he was actually there. Great expression, very conversational tone, etc.
The perfect audiobook series for your drive to work every day. Puts you in a good mood and makes the time pass quickly. What more can you want from a series like this?
I fell off this series about halfway through the 2nd one, it seemed like it stopped being a fun story about space exploration and more of a weird documentary about a society growing. Maybe I'll...

Ah great! I quite like this world so I'm looking forward to diving back in. I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of who I think the antagonists will be, but it could be interesting.

book 4 spoilers
It's been a while since I read it but I think I left the book with the sense that the bobs building an AI were pulling the strings of the rogue bobs, and that they would both be back with bigger war fleets etc.
It could be cool as the ability for the bobs to manufacture stuff set scale could see really big conflicts like in the polity series, but it doesn't really jibe well with the normal tone of the books.
I'm most likely wrong and am making bad assumptions based on my faulty memory though.

Ah cool. Well then I'll give it a try. I was ready for something to change.

The Deltan arc bored me into stopping reading the book. I really just didn't get into it.

That’s waaaaay further away than I expected based on what I had heard about Audible getting the recordings done, but at least there is a date now.
