This is sad. He's had a significant presence in the online dead head community since I started connecting with it over the last decade or so. Always seemed a caring, insightful person that was always on, imo, the right side of issues. I hope his husband, family, friends, and people that looked up to him find peace after mourning.

We both worked at HotWired during the dot-com era in the ‘90’s, where Steve was a journalist. He also wrote for Wired magazine. He once arranged for Allen Ginsberg to visit the office for an interview, and I see that interview is online. I didn’t know anything about Ginsberg at the time, but I got the impression that it was a big deal to see him in person.

HotWired had an odd format for interviews - they did it in person and someone typed it into HotWired’s chat system. In the dialup era, most people didn’t have a way to get audio or video live over the Internet. Not that the chat was all that accessible either - maybe a few dozen people connected via telnet on a good day. (My connection is that I fixed some bugs in the chat system.)

Another connection was through The Well, where Steve was active when I joined, and I remember him writing passionately about politics. There was a big deadhead community there.
