Good whodunnit/crime investigation books?
What are for you the best modern whodunnit/criminal investigation books? I'm interested in books like Sherlock Holmes where there are clever deductions but also books where everybody knows who the criminal is but they need to find evidence and the bad guy seems to always be two steps ahead (kind of like Daredevil season 3 with Wilson Fisk).
Doesn't exactly fit your description, but Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a very interesting book where a murder happens despite everybody in the town being aware that it'll happen and able to prevent it. IIRC, the investigator tries to find out why nobody intervened, and the intricacies of relationships and tradition that caused that. So the bad guy that's two steps ahead all the time is the culture, the past, in this book. Easily one of my favourites.
There was a reason Agatha Christie was by far the most-selling novelist of the 20th century, possibly of all time (excluding canonical religious texts).
Poirot and Miss Marple are novels you simply can't go wrong with. There's like 80 to choose from too if you like the style.
That sounds like it would get real annoying real fast.
