I've been watching his 2020 lecture series recently and he actually touches on this with some more detail (paraphrasing from memory: "They wanted another GRRM but faster-paced, they were waiting for Joe Abercrombie.").
One other thing he said that I think is worth taking away is "Everyone I know who wrote for a decade, even if they never got published, has never regretted it. And maybe they'll still get published and break out big, ask GRRM about that."
