I assumed it's a story about print vs digital but it seems also surprisingly political:

The 2017 reorganization and subsequent 2018 reboot both struggled with finding an identity for MAD in an increasingly satire-saturated world. Between websites that can deliver topical comedy in real time and a fiercely divided American populace who cannot agree on what comedy is because their preferences break down along party lines, MAD struggled to find an elusive niche. When political humor seemed to work, MAD doubled down on lampooning the Trump administration, which earned some critical praise but likely alienated conservative readers as well as putting the magazine in direct competitions with late night shows that were delivering content nightly rather than once every two months.

This is kinda bizarre/sad. I guess Mad has always been more broad in its appeal, politically, (with maybe younger, more progressive readers looking for more modern forms of entertainment) but to come to a point where it's no longer profitable to satirize the most satirizeable president in history is on a different level.

Comedy poking fun at Trump has been saturated since 2016, honestly the guy makes it almost too easy. I'm not surprised going that way lead to a tepid response.

I guess he's genuinely successful making himself look so ridiculous that people are burnt out with mocking him. Dear god, don't let that become a viable political strategy...

Kind of on topic but I was a huge fan of MadTV. I personally enjoyed it much more than SNL but I can see why SNL survived from a business standpoint. I’ve always been a sucker for raunchy comedy...
