        It was a joke. AMD developed the instruction set for 64-bit processors based on Intel's x86 instruction set, and called it amd64. Intel, in their very adult and super dignified way, insisted that...

        It was a joke. AMD developed the instruction set for 64-bit processors based on Intel's x86 instruction set, and called it amd64. Intel, in their very adult and super dignified way, insisted that Microsoft refer to the instruction set that AMD developed as "x86_64." The Linux kernel still refers to it by the name its developers gave it, which is why you'll see references to "amd64" in all that gobbledygook that scrolls past during updates and such.
