I switched to MXRoute 2 years ago while trying to rid myself of a legacy Google Apps account. It was exactly what I needed because there are no charges for additional users, forwarders, or domains— it's priced purely by storage space. I think there are some larger promo plans if you hunt around, like https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/187261/mxroute-independence-day-sale

The service is very reliable but very bare bones. You ideally want some technical knowledge (which is why I posted in ~comp ) but the Discord server is also very helpful.

Personally I've used Zoho Mail for the past several years. They've got a forever free plan which was enough for me, although they've now eliminated IMAP/POP from that plan for new users so you can't use 3rd party mail clients with the free plan.

MXRoute looks like an interesting option though. With this promo it's a little cheaper than Zoho for the same amount of storage, and more flexibility with the ability to have unlimited users and domains. It does seem more bare bones for sure though. They also seem very opinionated and borderline unprofessional with stuff like this: https://github.com/mxroute/da_server_updates/blob/master/sec/fuckthesenetworks.sh

At the same time, I kind of like how candid they are. It's clear that the company is small. Instead of beating around the bush, things are matter-of-fact... but not in a way that made me feel unwelcome on their site. They definitely make it clear that the service is not for beginners, that they won't tolerate their services being used for abuse, which features you can expect when using them, and which you shouldn't.

Some profanity doesn't bother me, as long as it isn't aimed at me. I understand though that that might not gel too well with some however, and probably won't win them any huge business contracts.

Now, to be clear, when I say candid in this case, I mean open, and not mean being rude to customers, or belittling them if they have questions, because that's not a good experience for anyone, and only harbors resentment. This is my first time hearing of them, but that's not the vibe I seem to be getting from them.

Please do correct me if I missed anything that seems particularly nasty.

Edit: I'm mixed. Not feeling quite as confident in my comment as I did while writing it. It looks like they can be a tad abrasive at times. There are two sides to every story though. Support account on Reddit.

Yeah I don't have a problem with them being candid and matter-of-fact in general, and their stance that the service requires some level of competency to use and they will not tolerate abuse is something that I can stand behind. But if I were a business choosing a service to buy, seeing how they present their strong opinions would be giving me a few red flags.

One opinion in particular that I don't like is their stance on 2FA. While they're not wrong here that MFA isn't actually supported at the POP/IMAP/SMTP protocol level, I disagree with their opinion that app passwords provide no value. Yes, they are just plain passwords that bypass MFA, but the service can dictate the length and complexity of these passwords more strongly than would be reasonable for forcing upon users for their regular account password. Also app passwords are typically just generated by the service itself and aren't settable by the user. Allowing the email provider to set complex app passwords here can reduce the likelihood of the password being brute forced or guessed, given common user password hygiene. For the technically minded person who is setting unique passwords for every account they use, and using passwords of sufficient complexity maybe app passwords don't add much value. But in general across the service's user base I would wager that implementing MFA for user webmail logins along with forcing complex app passwords for POP/IMAP/SMTP access would result in higher security for their users.

Also, I really hope they provide MFA on their admin portal for managing the service itself. There is absolutely no reason to not implement MFA on the administrator portal, but I can't find any documentation showing that it is. I would not use an email service, even personally, whose administrator access doesn't support MFA.

That was a good find, and I very much agree with you there. I'd find this especially important for webmail. Why shouldn't MFA be an option when logging into the admin panel/webmail? Absolutely. A...

Absolutely. A password you personally set for your account IMHO shouldn't be going through POP/IMAP/SMTP. That's where app-specific passwords come in. They can be reset in both the admin interface and the email client you're using reasonably quickly, without resetting the account password. The app-specific password cannot be used to log into the account admin panel as well, lowering the attack surface.

I've been with zoho for years now. Its only $1 or so per account -- super cheap. I've never had any issues with it either.

I've been quite happy with FastMail, given their API integration with generating forwarded aliases for BitWarden/VaultWarden.

Their lifetime option is pretty reasonably priced.

I bought a lifetime hosting two years ago, and I have to admit, I've been having some issues.

I can't change my "From" display name, because their system said my email isn't valid. MXRoute says it's likely domain related, but the domain is kosher and I've never had issues anywhere else. I've just... Not bothered with ithe issue for a year after letting the domain "sit for a bit" after transferring my mail provider.

Then I got myself locked out of their admin panel because I lost access to my google authenticator. I contacted their support about it -from the hosted email addresses- but I didn't even hear back.

      So, YMMV.

If you lock yourself out, use https://accounts.mxroute.com/index.php?/tickets/new/ (I found this link on their discord)

Pretty sure I did last time, without getting an answer. But thanks for the link, I'll try it again. I need to get my email sorted out after all, it's just been such a hassle.
