I saw another one related to this last week: a video about the prominence of the JV-1080 rompler in 90s video game music, which even included some interview material with Nobuo Uematsu. The notable similarity is that when CD quality audio was just becoming viable in games, there were still memory concerns, so many games just stored short one-note samples recorded off of synths and romplers, and triggered them with MIDI.
