I don't think anyone who has spent any real time with *nix will ever view it as anything short of miraculous. It persists because it is awesome, and it is difficult to express why that is so to people who, through their own inexperience, only see a command line and wrongly compare it to the shiny overlay of their daily driver GUI.

One miracle is that Linux has absolutely no test suite, and yet the kernel works pretty reliably.
