This seems reasonable. But there are some projects that are very picky about contributions, so it's good to ask before spending time writing a patch. It's a good idea to file a bug describing the problem and ask if a patch for it is worth working on, unless the patch is trivial.
This attitude is all well and good but I've never really come across something that I feel I want to fix. Maybe that's conditioning from a lifetime of proprietary software use though.
