Ubuntu 18.04
Anyone using Ubuntu 18.04 yet? I was thinking about installing it alongside Windows, but wasn't sure if I should wait and just install 16.04. Wanted to get a few opinions.

Ubuntu 18 uses Gnome as the default desktop enviornment. Other that that I didn't experience any difference to 16.
How are you finding the switch from Unity to Gnome?
Gnome is alright. It looks polished. The control settings panel/window is different. To be honest both are about equally fine. As someone who spends most of their time in the terminal I only experienced visual differences and the ones in the control settings window.
You know you can run virtual computers on you computer right? If you wanna test 16 and 18 side by side you should (if you don't already know) look into virtualization.
My preference is for Wayland so I probably won't bother upgrading to 18.04 and just wait until the next one when they reintroduce Wayland.
Wayland is still in 18.04, it just isn't the default anymore. You can choose Gnome with Wayland in the login screen.
I don't see that option. Is Wayland better than X11?
It will be better. It's on an upwards trajectory - while X11 is stagnant. It's up to you to determine at which point it intersects and exceeds X11.
I always wait for the LTS point release. I'm on KDE Neon which is 16.04. I haven't upgraded any servers yet.
18.04 appears to be LTS.

18.04 is LTS. Point release would be 18.04.X. It denotes the first patch for bug fixes. Waiting for the first point release for an LTS version is a common practice to make sure all the quirks are ironed out before deploying.
Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm using Kubuntu 18.04 right now actually, although I've replaced the default KDE 5 desktop with Trinity (basically KDE 3, a much older release). It's worked well for me so far, although I've never been a big fan of the Ubuntus because they're pretty fragile if you use them actively. I've had much better luck with OpenSUSE LEAP for something stable that lasts a long time. If you want to use KDE 5 or Gnome, I'd highly recommend looking it over and seeing if you like it, I'm only on Kubuntu because OpenSUSE's version of Trinity is currently not as complete as Kubuntu's.
It depends on what you're worried about. I just replaced in installation of 17 with it and it's been a net improvement so far. I don't know of a concrete reason to wait.
Thanks for the reply. I've decided to go for it, and so far so good. I was mainly concerned about OS breaking bugs.
I'm on 16.04 right now, running Cinnamon as my desktop. I will probably be switching over to Mint soon, since there are some features of Cinnamon that don't work well on Ubuntu and as far as I can tell will not be fixed. Since I like the desktop and the package environment is largely the same, Mint will be the simpler choice for me.
