My friend and I started a little songwriting project for ourselves. The objective is basically to write, record, mix, and release a song within a day. It's a lot of fun, and can lead to some interesting moments. Anyways, just wanted to share. This is the song we came up with from our recording session this last weekend.

I am an older dude that knows very little about music so don't take anything I say very seriously. I like the non-vocal parts but I wish this song had more singing. I like the singer a lot. It made me think of Yung Lean although I don't think it is similar. I like how young people now are singing in very interesting ways that are not really what vocal coaches teach (the grunge movement did that too).
I would suggest for the singer (singers?) to put just a little more energy. I get that the idea is to be chill, but I would be interested in listening to a version of this song where the singing has just a little more punch and enunciation. I can't say anything about the lyrics since English is not my first language and I didn't understand a word. I'm sure that would enhance my experience quite a bit.
Other things I hear in this song: Wilco, The Velvet Underground.
I really like this song. Perhaps you could share the lirycs?
Oh thanks! Wilco and The VU are huge influences to both of us! My friend was the one singing on this track, I don't have a copy of the lyrics, but I can definitely ask him for the lyrics next time...

That is really great. Any chance you'll work some more on this song though? I like it and I think it can really shine with some adjustments now that you have some feedback. Feel free to ping me on...

I think we might circle back to it eventually, though it might be a little bit of time. Will definitely send you an updated version if we ever do revisit this one!

Thanks for sharing. My main impression is that I would have balanced the parts/tracks a bit differently. If you guys were deliberately aiming for a more "soundscape washing over you" feel, well, I guess you achieved that. But if I mixed it, I'd put the vocals more forward in the mix, perhaps right out in the foreground. Even in the instrumental parts, I'd bring one or two things out into the spotlight, for the ear and mind to focus on and "watch". Maybe even carry a melody of sorts. Perhaps I'm just too used to popular(ish) music of the last half century.
If you're willing to share the individual tracks, I could take a stab at a mix, and send that back to you. Overall, it's good that you guys put in the time and effort to make something tangible. With a lot of people, creative works are just ideas parked in their head, with nothing to show.
Fair enough, both of us are kinda self conscious about our vocals sometimes so we always tend to mix our voices back a little bit in the mix lol. Also both of us just really tend to be into those...

Also both of us just really tend to be into those hazy, shoegazey kinds of mixes where the vocals are intentionally mixed back a little bit. Will definitely work on that though, that's the main comment I usually get when sharing music - turn up the vocals.
I wouldn't say the soundscape kind of vibe was a goal per se, there really wasn't much planning or reference tracks or anything like that. The only deliberate aim we had for this one was to just start and finish the writing and production of a song within a day. Started around 11am last Saturday and wrapped it up just a little before midnight. We kinda set this challenge for ourselves because we both fall into that ideas trap that you referenced. We both have like hundreds of song snippets we've recorded but hardly ever release anything, so this was kind of an exercise to overcome the fear of putting music out into the world hah. I am not around my home computer at the moment, but I could definitely send them over to you when I get back home. Would love to hear what you could do with them! Stems will probably be a little rough too since we shotgunned the whole session together as fast as possible lol.
Yeah, I hear what you're saying. It's actually quite good given the very small time constraint. "overcoming the fear": congrats. You did it! Send me the stems over DM with Nextcloud, Dropbox, or...

Send me the stems over DM with Nextcloud, Dropbox, or whatever. Just something that won't need an account signup, if possible; and don't forget to set up a way for me to send stuff back to you. Don't worry about cleanliness of the tracks. I can do a bit of cleanup there, too, if needed.

sounds cool. vocals sound latter day modest mouse. also love the band name (assuming) reference to silver jews.
Awesome! Love Modest Mouse! And the band name absolutely is a reference to the Silver Jews song hah.
