Thought about downloading some free assets from itch.io, booting up RPG Maker and making a game for the hell of it. I want it to be a 16-bit fantasy turn based RPG with intuitive mechanics and elements of permadeath.

A basic plot I had in mind was that you woke up in a cave with amnesia. You are approached by royal guards seeking you out because the King had a prophetic dream about you protecting the kingdom. This kingdom is sealed off by wards that protect it from the enroaching darkness which engulfs the lands outside. Said dark lands outside the kingdom's borders are fully explorable and expand way beyond the intended path of the player by the way. They're incredibly dangerous though, even for incredibly high levelled players running on a New Game+ file.

You're sent on a quest to protect each of the game's six temples, which house wards that protect the kingdom from darkness. These temples serve as the game's dungeons. You can tackle them in any order but the difficulty scales up based on which order you completed them in.

Think how progression in Fallout New Vegas was. You could theoretically rush straight to New Vegas via the most direct route but high levelled mobs would eviscerate a lower levelled player. Except this time the plot actively discourages the player from going through the dark lands and the enemies become very threatening there - but there is almost like an alternative quest hidden there only for the most dedicated completionists and masochists out there.

I won't spoil the underlying plot beyond what I highlighted above, but I intend for the game to have multiple endings, based on multiple criteria like:

    • Beating the final boss at certain points in the story - with varying amounts of in-game dungeons completed. The bad ending comes from all temples complete, and the endings get progressively better as you complete fewer dungeons.
    • Beating the final boss with no in-game dungeons completed. Only realistically possible on NG+ unless someone finds out a strategy to engage the final boss without appropriate stats. This gets the good ending.
    • Beating the final boss without any party members dying through the whole playthrough. This gets an alternative ending which is kinda good but also bad.
    • Completing an alternative route which brings you outside the kingdom in the Dark Lands. I want this ending to be incredibly hard to obtain - like so challenging that it makes Final Fantasy superbosses look trivial by comparison. This would get the best ending.
    • Worst ending comes from dying in the Dark Lands. I want the consequences to be so high that you get the worst possible ending rather than a generic game over.

Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship season. Submitting a Rick and Morty spec and an original pilot based off a comic idea I had, and I'm also working on a Harley Quinn idea as a backup.

I've been writing a long instrumental heavily inspired by Tubular Bells, to help process a few difficult emotional and identity issues I've been struggling with. Progress has stalled a little as I've not had time to sit down and work on it, but it's been a very enjoyable process so far. Particularly as I'm not used to writing in the style that I've gone with, and I've been agonising over some individual note choices as well... Far beyond my usual approach to songwriting, but I'm really enjoying it.
