Patricia Moore undertook an extraordinary journey to become the inventor of what's now known as "universal design". She was a key advisor on the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, and has influenced thousands of products and public design projects.
Her most well-known design, the OXO vegetable peeler handle, is something I literally couldn't function without, and I'd suspect most of us are working in fields where we could give more inclusive consideration to our product users' range of physical and mental abilities.
This woman is a fucking Goddess. I'm over 60 and in good health. I often see people younger than myself moving like older people. I've fought my municipality (amd won) for a parking sign in front of my apartment building to help a disabled neighbor. The ADA is the lynchpin to allowing anyone a fair shot at a job. I didn't know Ms Moore existed, but for me, she now ranks right up there as one of the leading architects of the modern world.
As I start to stare down my retirement and aging, I am very grateful for everything this awesome human has done. I hope she has inspired others in her industry to carry on her ongoing legacy.
Thank you! I didn't know her story. I do know that life is much easier for me with my (so far) minor disabilities such as lack of grip strength in my hands, because of people like her.
