The decline of U.S. power and Western European cohesion in NATO has been part of a deliberate Russian strategy. Russia's long-term goal is to gain wealth from large fossil fuel deposits, and promote climate change. They're the biggest geographic winner of warming trends which will improve the habitability and exploitability of Russian national territory. This is the bigger game that few credible analysts have discussed to date.

I bring this up every time arctic shipping is mentioned, but I'll do it again here: it's going to be an unmitigated disaster when it comes to accelerating global warming. Cargo ships run on some of the nastiest fossil fuels available, low grade stuff that isn't permitted to be burned anywhere but the high seas. In addition to raising local CO2 levels, the dark soot they put out is going to increase the amount of warmth that otherwise reflective ice absorbs from the sun, melting it faster. And melting ice is one of the worst feedback loops you can start, since it replaces the most reflective natural material on the planet with the most absorptive: seawater.

We desperately need to ban arctic shipping before its lobby gets too big to fight. Or at the very least restrict it to electric boats.

I don't think anyone is going to "win" from the kind of climate change that sets Siberian forests ablaze, kills off the fish populations that Arctic populations rely on for protein, and drops methane sinkholes randomly around the landscape. Not to mention the anger and instability throughout the rest of the world.

Oh, agree with that as well. You think the middle-east immigration issue is a factor now? Just wait 30-50 years. But the heads of state in these countries are paid to think for their own fiefdoms,...

Oh, agree with that as well. You think the middle-east immigration issue is a factor now? Just wait 30-50 years. But the heads of state in these countries are paid to think for their own fiefdoms, and even when they think “long-term” it’s still short-term from a global citizen POV.

I completely agree with you, and thank you for stating that. I remember seeing a video with a Russian minister being quite open with his happiness about climate change. Russia has fought many wars to attain year round ice-free ports, and climate change will deliver this victory without a shot fired.

I would just like to point out that Canada will also “win” from climate change. When Trudeau bought the pipeline, I thought it was dumb on his part. But it is “good” for Canada really, I suppose, in more than one way.
