What an odd choice of title. Rather, it should have been "Walkout of Oregon Republican senators successfully stops carbon bill."

According to the article they never had the votes in the Senate to begin with?

But it had zero impact on the climate change bill, [Sen. Sara] Gelser said.

"It was my understanding before they left the building that we did not have 16 votes for that bill," Gelser said. "It did not fail because of a walkout."

The Republicans, though, painted their boycott as a triumph.

So is this just political terrorism then? It was all just a display of unrest to further divide people.

So then why did republicans threaten violence? Is that the only reason why? I mean the biggest blowback from this was the quarantine of r/the_donald.. so maybe it was at best a bittersweet victory?

Call me paranoid, but to me this whole situation genuinely felt like the Oregon Republicans were testing the waters for inciting armed insurrection. And given the demographic shift about to happen in the next few decades virtually guaranteeing Republicans all over the US will likely lose much, if not all, of their power at both the State and Federal levels (making them even more desperate than they are now), that honestly scares the shit out of me... and I'm not even American.

What do you think is the best way forward for progressives in this corporatist/centrist media environment? I know this is the question of the century, I am just looking for opinions.

Honestly, I have no fucking clue what the best way forward for progressives is in the US if armed insurrection by right wing extremists is genuinely on the horizon. But given it might not be, and a major part of the goal here is clearly to terrorize and intimidate those on the left into submission, I suppose just trying to avoid giving in to that fear would be my only advice.

Yeah, that definitely sounds paranoid to me.

With only two days before the 2019 legislative session officially ends, the Senate hurried through some of the more than 100 bills and motions that were still pending. Among the measures are ones on paid family and medical leave, campaign funding, and funding for the Oregon Food Bank and for Medicaid. Other big-ticket items are a bill aimed at addressing sexual harassment in the Capitol, money to expand affordable housing and an increased tobacco tax.

The Republicans wielded power disproportionate to their numbers this session. They walked out of the Senate last month to block a school funding tax package. They returned only after Gov. Kate Brown brokered a deal in which Democrats dropped legislation on gun control and children's vaccination requirements.

Interestingly this is the first article I've read about this that mentions the previous walk-out. That really put this into context for me. My guess is there were some backroom negotiations to resolve this one as well, with the governor securing enough votes to defeat some of the other Democrat initiatives as well as the cap-and-trade bill.

The threats from senator Brian Boquist mostly sound like pandering to his base for me.

A base which is clearly itching to partake in armed insurrection. And while I may be being paranoid, since the future is hard to predict and the American media admittedly does distort things quite a bit, IMO ignoring the potential threat of right-wing militias, domestic terrorists and/or paramilitary groups in the US is being blind to history. Coups and purges leading to power consolidations generally don't take all that many ardent supporters to actually pull off, especially when those supporters are willing to murder and terrorize in order to accomplish it. See: Brownshirts, Night of the Long Knives, Blackshirts, Ba'ath Party Purge, and more recently, the still ongoing purges in Turkey.

Thank you. I didn't want to editorialize the post myself. Just imagine if Democrats had called for armed conflict with state police to stop a bill from proceeding to a vote. This entire thing makes me feel ill.

Without resorting to the same tactics, which would be a terrible strategy IMO, how can progressives move the country forward in this environment?

This is a prime example of why protesting must be protected under law, and considered a valid political strategy.
