Does any one have examples of this?

And that is happening while China, a rival hostile power that poses an even greater challenge than the USSR once did, pulls ahead of it in world-defining technology. Once galvanized to action by the USSR’s launch of Sputnik, the U.S. now witnesses the equivalent of the launch of a dozen Sputniks from Beijing every year, with no corresponding response.

It all comes back to this story. China kicks out more than double the number of new PhDs per year that the USA does. That particular bit has been spun into a thousand apocalyptic quotes in a thousand news stories, including the one you mentioned. Pick a field and google around, you'll probably find China investing more money and manpower in it than anyone else. They don't mind chasing R&D without an apparent profit to justify it.

I find it interesting that their government is also limiting screen time. If I had to pick one thing they do that just might give them a real edge, it's not the PhDs or money - it's preventing the brains of their youth from being reduced to mush by random internet garbage.

Just at a glance, I don't see how that particular statistic would be anything but good news for the US. Since there are ~4x as many Chinese as Americans, that sounds like the US is still doing...

I don't think there is any truly "Sputnik"-level shocker out of China ... but their space program has been learning and advancing and breaking new ground steadily, and arguably much faster than the US (or anyone else) for over a decade. They have their own space station, which they are expanding. Their Moon exploration (and, ultimately, exploitation) program has been hitting milestone after milestone, and is probably now further along than US efforts. They recently landed and controlled a research mission to the far side of the Moon which was a huge global "first", which did not really get the "holy shit" level of media attention it deserved.
Recently, they've had a couple of significant successes in Mars exploration; they are definitely still behind the US on that particular rock, but they're probably gaining ... and if they aren't, SpaceX alone is what is keeping the US in the lead there.

That's really strange because over here in India, the narrative is that "brain drain" is carrying all our useful talent abroad! Pichai and Nadella are often scorned upon as the Indians who betrayed their own country to go and help the "westerners" instead of starting their own institutions here!
