I'm sad that our relationship with Canada has been diminished by one person most of us didn't vote for.

I mean, there is the argument that a lot of people still voted for Trump. But yeah, it's terrible that US relations with other countries have deteriorated so fast in just 2 years of Trump's presidency. I imagine we still don't know the full impact of these measures (feel free to correct me, I haven't been checking indexes and stuff). There's also the incoming tariffs on China 6 of July, which will impact China's economy.

While I agree, wasn't th US basically getting the raw end of a lot of deals just so we could have a good relationship with other countries? I always felt like America took the worse end of a deal...

I'm Canadian, but I always sorta got the opposite impression. The US throws its weight around and can bully other countries into giving them better deals. Your country wants to nationalize its oil production? The US is going to overthrow your democratically elected president and install a dictator. Bananas? Same deal. Sugar? Same deal.

The US gives crazy subsidies to its farmers, making their products so much cheaper than any other country. Canada imposes something like a 300% tarrif on US milk, but that's because the US pays its milk farmers to produce below cost. The day we drop those tarrifs is the day every single Canadian dairy farmer goes out of business and we become 100% reliant on the US for all dairy.

At one point, the US was subsidizing its cotton so much that Brazil filed a dispute with the WTO. Basically no one can compete with the US's cotton prices, because the government gives such huge subsidies to the cotton industry that other countries can't possibly produce cotton that cheaply. So, the US decides, we're not going to stop subsidizing our farmers, instead, we're going to subsidize Brazilian farmers as well, just to shut them up.

If these trade wars get us to stop subsidizing crops like corn and cotton, I'm 100% for them even if it costs me more in the short term. However, I can afford for this to be the case....

However, I can afford for this to be the case. Unfortunately many Americans might not be able to. Then again, many Americans who are poor voted for trump, and maybe this will shock some sense into them.

You're in for a shock if the U.S. stops subsidising corn. Corn is in everything and is a huge part of feeding industrial cattle. (Fructose from corn isn't just effective at fattening humans, it works on animals too.) Basically, all meat and the majority of processed food will jump up in price.

Corn is insanely important to the U.S. food industry. In this CNN article, the journalist got their hair tested and 69% of the carbon in their hair came from corn.

But this logic also applies to the US. People hate Trump for thinking this way, but it makes sense. You have that tariff to protect Canadian citizens. Trump is using the same logic. I'm no Trump...

I'm no Trump supporter, I just understand his logic on certain issues. Look at everything the US has outsourced and how it affects employment here and how it affects finances here.

Protectionism is all over the world - every country has a few things they subsidize the hell out of. All in all, this globalized economy is a mess - it assumes a level playing field when there is anything of the sort. We (US) can't compete on wages (why would we want a Chinese standard of living?) so it becomes a race to the bottom - now we've got 23 states that are "right to work" and unions are mostly destroyed.

US consumers clamor for "dolphin safe tuna" - Mexico doesn't like competing and sues in WTO courts, wins, now "dolphin safe" labeling is illegal.

US consumers prefer domestic beef - Canada sues to protect their beef producers, wins, now "country of origin labeling is illegal. Now I have to worry about getting some pink slime horse meat from China laced with melamine.

In no way am I letting us of the hook for nefarious tactics but their is also no way this is a one way street. Big business wins and consumers lose.

I am not saying it is good or bad. I am just saying that is how I saw things. Other countries have just come to expect it now, and I think some take it for granted.
