Anyone here following cryptocurrency?

Was just wondering if anyone in the Tildes community follows cryptocurrency at all. I'd say it's one of my biggest hobbies. Bitcoin is of course the king, but I like what Ethereum and some smaller protocols are working on as well. I see a lot of potential on the horizon.

For example, I think Pool Together is a great idea (no-loss lottery).

I also learned about this game from a friend called Axie Infinity which looks pretty fun.

I don't mean this to be a thread to shill your bags or talk about going to the moon, but more of a crypto-focused discussion on what you're following, interested in, sharing cool dapps, etc. Just seeing if there's any interest in a regular crypto discussion thread here. (Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.)

I have an ethereum wallet on a failed hard drive with two ethercoins so I'm waiting for the price to go to about 3k before I bother thinking about how to recover them. I'll hang on to it just in case.

I'm not really a fan of the goldrush that has surrounded these cryptocurrencies nor the anarcho capitalist culture that tends to form around them in the interest forums.

Yeah I have a wallet with over 1 BTC from 2013 that I don't remember the password to (I had an eCommerce site that integrated BTC at checkout and only made one handwritten note with the password, which my partner misplaced) -- I've tried guessing the password about 100 times with no luck.

Have you looked into Decentralized Finance? DefiPulse - it's the new hype around crypto. Basically can take loans out, earn interest and more, without having to sign anything. Check this article for an example: don't watch the video, it's unrelated

Depending on the complexity of the password you used, you might be able to crack it. I have access to some powerful hardware and I'd be willing to give it a shot. PM me if you're interested.

There are professional wallet cracking services out there. IIRC they can accept payment as a percentage of the wallet contents, so you don't need to pay up front.

Never send anyone your wallet.dat. If they successfully crack it they can empty it and there's nothing you can do. What you'll need to do is create a hash of the wallet and send them that. If they crack that, they get your password, and you can pay them for the password. There is of course nothing stopping them from waiting a week and saying they've cracked the password, then demanding a thousand bucks and disappearing into the night.

I've avoided cryto because i first heard about it in 2011 when it was big in Libertarian circles and less than £5 a coin and i thought it was a bit of a scam and more effort than i could be bothered with. I mean people were literally giving it away (hence why i have £5 in bitcoin that started as a .14 drip) I kick myself every time i convert the £100 i was thinking of "investing" into the current value.

I also kind of avoided it because it doesn't feel very "crypto" anymore. To convert GBP to bitcoin i need to send coin base a picture of my id and address which feels weird.

I recommend downloading the wallet "imtoken" in the app store and checking out some of the apps in their browser. You need ETH or DAI (DAI is a stablecoin built on ETH tied to $1 USD) to interact with most of them.

Also, pooltogether is giving away 1 ticket (worth 1 DAI ($1 USD)) to people who text this # (1 ticket to their weekly drawing) - https://twitter.com/PoolTogether_/status/1233103891849498628 - if you have the ability to text you can get started this way :)

I was following Gridcoin for a while there. It's pretty cool. I'm personally only interested in crypto that aren't focused primarily in some "store of fiat wealth", so ones that involve like addressing better proof of work, and involve addressing the lack of liquidity. I generally speaking don't love the idea of bootstrapping services on money.

I will have to look into that. Will be interesting to see what happens when Ethereum transitions away from PoW to PoS in ETH 2.0

I have a concern that PoS without PoW means that any inflation gets captured in the accounts of people who are currently not spending. When enough people aren't spending, the scarcity of the currency goes up driving deflation. This could cause a deflationary spiral. One of the things that I do like about crypto though is that we basically are running thousands of economics experiments at once, so if that's true we'll see it all play out.
