It's been over a month since I've cut out animal products from my diet, and I'm kind of amazed at how my tastes have changed. I already knew that the brassica family could be amazing if you just cooked them a little with a decent sauce, but Asparagus is like the food of the gods. It doesn't even need a sauce; just maybe lightly salt it and put roast it for just a short moment and it's like a flavor bomb goes off in your mouth. Before, I used to love it wrapped in bacon or cooked in bacon fat, but now I don't even need it and it's still got a surprisingly meaty flavor to it.
I've also become somewhat addicted to eating mandarin oranges, but I might have talked about that already.
Oof, the winter savior. I was just discussing the approach of summer fruit/veg at our local farmers market with some friends and we all agreed it would be hard to get through winter without mandarin oranges (or my personal favorite Cara Cara oranges).
