So based on the article it sounds like they are basing the idea that Vikings drank cider on... the fact that they had apples and liked alcohol lol. Seems kinda flimsy, the article doesn't mention any archeological evidence other than someone being buried with a bushel of apples and I'm guessing there isn't any mention of cider in the viking sagas or other sources.
I find this all the more bizarre given the very well known Viking drink in Mead.
