Cooking/Eating
Last week I made an acceptable, but mostly disappointing and overly complicated biryani, next time will be something from this thread - https://tild.es/1dvt - did find a lovely and not-overly-expensive spice shop one town over, so that's a nice thing to have in my pocket as we do a lot of spice heavy cooking with things you can't always get at a normal or even the local "ethnic" grocery stores.
This week is a Spanish Chorizo and Potato soup that from the tastes tests is already a winner.
My wife and I meal prep on Sundays for the week's lunches so we don't have to cook each day. Weeknights are free-for-all unless one of us wants something specific or lunch was a large enough portion to also have for dinner, sometimes with other changes. For example, I have enough broth left over from the above soup that sometime this week I'm going to have a bowl of ramen with that broth for dinner. Did this last week with birria consume I picked up from a food truck while running errands.
Drinking
Not that slowing down on alcohol is a bad thing at all, but I've definitely done so and moved more in the direction of straight/rocks whiskey/bourbon instead of mixed drinks. This is partially because my mixing whiskey of choice is oddly expensive here in Colorado and sometimes more difficult than it should be to find. As of late I've been enjoying a local whiskey from Stranahan's, specifically a single barrel, cask strength that is downright cheap for what it is and a bottle of this special release is less expensive here than their normal release (also very good) is in Texas, so Go Local Whiskey! It is downright delicious and at 125 Proof one pour is more than enough to melt the day away. My only complaint is that at 125 proof, I can't actually get any of the "nose" notes by smelling it in the glass, it's just nose-hair-curling-burn if you stick your nose in there for a whiff. None of that burn once it's on the tongue thankfully. It also doesn't need any ice/water to open it up for other flavors, so I just hold my breath for a moment when I take a sip. I'm not far into the bottle I have, but will pick up another to have on hand (as I've done with other favorites).
I had to change my mixing whisky due to the same problems. I'm using Wild Turkey 101 now and it makes a really good smoked old fashioned as well as most of the other mixed drinks in our library. The only thing it doesn't help with is the rye based drinks. The bourbon and rye I used to use are from the same distillery, so it hurts on both.
I made a vegan (well, veggie) burger today! I grab whatever new offerings pop-up in the vegan alternative shelves to give them a go, and still had a package of this so I prepared it today. I used cheese slices, so the meal was veggie, not completely vegan.
The burger patties were the type you mix with water and let set in the fridge for a bit, and let me tell you, I thought it was something else when I poured it out. One of the ingredients was corn flakes in the form of rice-sized grains (guessing for texture?) and it looked very much like dried worms at first glance
The taste was good! Nicely savoury, and it took to frying nicely, didn't fall apart. It didn't really taste meaty, but I don't really care about that, I just wanted a tasty meal. Tons of protein and fiber, too!
