Feels like autumn is around the corner, and I'm ready for warm, hearty soups and stews (not that i stop eating them in summer...).
So, I made a really lovely beef and lentil bolognase the other day, using tomatoes from the garden as the base. God I love proper tomatoes. I wish grocery store tomatoes were even half as flavourful.
We have garden tomatoes right now and they are phenomenal. We planted three sizes and each one is significantly better than any store bought tomato ever. It's tragic that the mass market variety of tomatoes is so many steps down in taste and quality.
We are lucky to get local hot house tomatoes at our farmers market that are only slightly less good than home grown for most of the year.
So jealous! I have a fantastic local farmer's market nearby, but none of the vendors do hothouses to support summer veg year-round. Understandable, they're very small farmers in a not-huge market region, but still.
My partner was out of town this weekend so I spent saturday making a 24hr pho. Ive been working on the recipe for a while and it's never been something I've been happy with. Until now. I've finally nailed a flavor that is close to traditional. Still some work to do but I'm happy that is feels like some progress has been made.
It's hot as heck here in Southern Ontario and grilling season is still going on. There's been a lot of burgers, chicken, pork, kebabs, fish. This past week, Beyond Burgers were (finally) on sale at CostCo, so those have made a few appearances in the last week as well. My kids that are still at home love them, and would have them just about every day. We have also been having salads as a side almost every day, since the Canadian lettuce is widely available right now. From October through to June, it's hard to get leafy produce that is not from the place that shall not be named so we tend to do without during that time, so we have been doing as much leafy greens as we can while the season is on.
The kids love caesar salad, so that tends to be the go-to dressing, but I usually make a homemade salad dressing as well. Olive oil, nice mustard, a bit of vinegar, and a little bit of maple syrup makes a really nice salad topper.
