I actually started doing this with my son this summer. I garden regularly already but I gave him a few pots that were specifically "his" and had him plant the seeds and follow their growth. I did two foods that I know he already likes and would recognize when they were grown, carrots and broccoli.
I did not tell him what they were before hand, I wanted it to be a surprise. So I wasn't doing it for the exact same reasons as this article, but I guess it will have had the same effect. He guessed the broccoli pretty quickly (he calls it baby trees), but the big reveal when I finally had him pull up a carrot was priceless.

You could try giving him a selection of root vegetables so that each one is different when he pulls them up. Like a lucky dip.
I may have to do that next summer, just mix up a bunch of root veggie seeds .
