It's a bit... not nice these days, lots of construction work, some stupid grandiose projects and some faux-reparing in order to steal tax money, lots of traffic and crowd in public transport, prices skyrocketing, especially recently (though should not be a big problem for tourists), and low quality cafes and restaurants; but still it's also sort-of nice. Looks like I'll have to stay for 3-4 more years here, but if I could I'd move to Eskisehir, a new and beautiful city.

One tip about visiting Istanbul is to not come on summer, because then it's going to be crowded and touristy. But from October to April, it's really nicer, both because it's relatively less crowded and not sweaty; it's a very humid city and it kills you (well, me at least) in the summer.

I enjoyed the short time I was there. I had just under a week. It was around '97/98 I visited, so I'm not sure what it's like these days.
