I am loving the discussions around rice cookers these days. I love rice. I love my rice cooker. This memoir collection from South Louisiana perfectly encapsulates the pervasive cultural icon that is the Hitachi rice cooker in South LA. My rice cooker doesn't ding like these do, but I still tell my partner all the time that I'm "just waiting for the rice to ding" and dinner will be ready.

I'm surprised how many people there said that their favorite rice dish was some form of gravy rice, since it's conceptually similar to one of Japan's favorite rice dishes - curry with rice. Curry and Gravy are pretty much the same thing; you just build up a roux, use it to thicken a liquid, and add spices somewhere along the way.
I haven't tried Cajun-style gravy and rice, but I can imagine it's very tasty indeed. That sausage and chicken one sounded especially nice.

I think this video I just watched is a good follow-on, it goes into the technical details of old-school cookers. I love my rice cooker.
