Can't really speak for the later games. I haven't played Gears 3, Judgement, 4 or 5, and I'm not particularly planning to play them until xCloud gets keyboard & mouse support. I do know how the original trilogy ends though.

But Gears of War 2 was by far a huge improvement over the first game, both from a balancing and narrative perspective. I will die on that hill of celebrating what a great game it was. The first Gears game had hardly any memorable moments and felt like a generic "you vs another species" sci-fi plot. All it really did was serve as an ultra-gory Unreal 3 tech demo that Epic somehow got working on the Xbox 360's already-weak hardware.

Gears 2 was full of set-pieces, had incredible pacing, plenty of shock moments and was the only game to my knowledge where you actually go underground and take the fight to the Locust.

I don't get Noah's point about why the Dom and Maria scene in Gears 2 was bad. Having Fenix snap his buddy out of his delusion and see what the Locust really did to his wife was one of the most powerful moments of the franchise. Even if it was completely expected - I mean Tai's suicide two chapters ago was pretty much the moment that told you Locust imprisonment and torture was brutal enough to utterly break a COG soldier. This was Tai after just an hour with Skorge as his jailor.

He didn't say it was bad, he said it didn't work for him because he felt it was a bit too much of an overcorrection because their original versions were eliciting laughs instead of the desired sentiment of sadness. He actually refers to that earlier scene as a reason why this later scene didn't work for him, since that set up a similar approach with the more delicate hand he would have preferred.

Really, throughout his entire analysis of the series, he's picking up on a lot of minor details and themes that are pretty subtle. That moment (which he does fairly acknowledge is a major moment in gaming writ large and he feels kind of bad for not really enjoying) is kind of like an emotional Flamin' Hot Cheeto on a delicate palate.

Even if xCloud gets mouse and keyboard support, I wouldn't count on the Xbox 360 games getting updated to take advantage of it.

I have a feeling xCloud doesn't support mouse input because the input latency would be much more immediately noticeable than it is with a joystick.

What Gears of War brought to the table was well thought out third person shooter gameplay that was polished to a previously unseen level. Previous heavy hitters in this space (Resident Evil 4, the GTA trilogy, etc.) felt downright stiff and janky in comparison. As the years have passed, this has given Gears of War a bit of that "Seinfeld is Unfunny" stink. The rest of the industry caught up and surpassed Gears of War in the gameplay and polish department, and as you pointed out, the other aspects of the game aren't enough to hold it up today.

I dunno... Stadia has KB&M support. There are also third party Chrome extensions that can add that support in some capacity.
