TL;DR:
Promotion series removed
New rank, Emerald, between Platinum and Diamond. (ranked skin rewards are still awarded gold+)
Diamond and Apex (master+) population will be reduced (dev tweet here)
"Currently in League, many Silver players are actually above average in skill, while Gold players are significantly above average."
If one looks at the numbers, a person in the 30th percentile is at the bottom of silver. If that same person were to improve to the 60th percentile, which is an astronomical improvement, they would still be in silver. IMO this led to the vast majority of the lower ranked playerbase simply not caring enough to play, as there is very little visual feedback for their growth as a player. In the new system, the same person going from 30th to 60th percentile would mean a visual rank change from the bottom of silver to the top of gold. I think this is a hugely positive change that hopefully encourages more players to play more competitively.
The slightly more controversial change, the decimation of the master+ population. According to the blog:
"It is accurate that there are more players at high ranks, but important to note that we didn’t change the MMR requirements to sustain those ranks between 2022 and 2023. With the faster LP progression, players are reaching places they would end up anyway over time, just more quickly."
So master isn't any less prestigious now than before. With that being said, the client crashes upon opening the ranked ladder tab because it can't handle displaying this many players LOL. I think this is a positive change overall, particularly because this will lower the grandmaster floor. Hitting master and then not having any visual rank goal within 800 LP was very demotivating.
What do you guys think?
P.S.: I don't expect this to get any traction, as the League of Legends community on Tildes is most likely very very small, but I love this game to death and somebody has to get the ball rolling, so I will keep posting these things whenever they come up :)
I haven’t played myself very often recently but have been involved with LoL since season 2 and still watch others play it nearly every night. Keep up the posts!

Personally, I've heard many complaints from different people regarding the state of masters. As you've mentioned yourself, one of the biggest problems was the rising LP ceiling causing many players to be perma stuck and essentially having nowhere to go. With increased LP gains, I think there were quite the number of diamond players recently peaking masters. Coupled with a high entry requirement for GM, if I remember correctly, the percentage of players in masters+ has been the highest ever (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I don't think these changes are particularly bad at least, and as a platinum player I won't really be affected anyway.
On another note, this is the first time I've seen a post about League on this website. Thanks for your contribution!
You are correct, however it's still well below 1%, and most of them just camp the 0-10 LP window. Currently on EUW, master 0 LP is rank ~20k, while 25 LP (equivalent of 1 win) is around rank ~14k....

Still, the LP difference between low master and low GM is astronomical, the equivalent of going from gold 4 to diamond 4, without any visual progression whatsoever. I am looking forward to this change, as I'd rather demote to high diamond and have a meaningful progression.
I will keep posting things such as patch notes and dev blogs, so that hopefully more people can use Tildes as their platform of choice for League news :D

Promotion really felt like some sort of artificial test situation that often just ended in frustration with very little you could have done differently. It's a promotion, but since it's ranked anyway, you always play seriously anyways, so what's the point?
Flattening of the curve sounds good to me but I can't really articulate why. Just feels better to me.
I do not play nearly as much ranked as I used to, but honestly? the removal of promos is enough for me to start grinding in ranked again. I used to get the feeling that getting to promotional...

I used to get the feeling that getting to promotional series was a punishment; doomed by the league gods to give me poor performing teammates.. this change is huge and I'm very excited for it.
