Saturday Game Jam Thread (June 24 2023)

Hello ladies and gentlegamers, welcome to a new kind of weekly thread. Unlike more reputable threads around here which get their games from places like Steam and the Nintendo e-shop we are here to explore the some thing much more raw made by deranged indie developers running on too little sleep. That’s right we are here to talk about video games that come from game jams

Whats a game jam you may ask. Well imagine if you locked a group of game developers in a box for box for some quantity of time ranging from a few days to a few week and told them to compete with each other by building something around a theme and then judging whatever each other came up with, that's a game jam. Its voluntary crunch time and people are crazy enough to actually sign up for these things for some reason. There are more games submitted for various game jams than anyone could ever play and that is where I come in.

I select a double feature of two games each week on Saturday. I make no assurances related to quality or sanity. If you have issues with these picks leave a comment I will try and accommodate your feedback next week. Now without further ado, welcome one and all to the Saturday Game Jam thread(Its still Saturday somewhere in the world right?)

Anger Foot

Platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux
Genres: Shooter, Action

Do you dream of battling a sewer dwelling cabal of lizard people, are you mad that Gunpoint only let you have the gatecrasher upgrade on the last level, do you like hurting other people?

Anger Foot is a Hotline Miami inspired first people shooter born from the 7day fps game jam. Its got a thumping hardbass soundtrack and nonstop action to keep your blood pumping. Its since moved on to greener pastures and has a stated release on Steam in 2024 so if you like the prototype make sure to wish list the game on Steam.

Interminal

Platforms: Windows, macOS
Genres: Walking Sim

After gunning people down why not stop and smell the roses or perfumes as the case may be. Interminal is a short experimental game also coming the 7day fps game jam about wandering around an infinite airport smelling various perfumes, watching the planes take off, and contemplating life. Its a shame that everyone here lacks the hardware to actually let you smell the perfumes but you guys are an imaginative bunch so I trust you. Let me know what your favorite perfume is in the comments.

That’s all for now. In true Tildes fashion I wanted to start slow and maybe grow later. Again leave feedback in the comments if you feel an improvement can be made

Both look interesting. A pure airport terminal walking sim, we don't have enough of those, and a first-person-shooter take on Hotline Miami sounds quite intriquing. Game jams often result in interesting content, whether it is comics, stories, board games or video games. The fixed theme and tight deadline forces you to just get stuff done, you simply don't have time for the navel-gazing artsy insecurity. Turns out that plenty of great games started out as jam entries.

I participated in a jam by quiver.dev, where I won second price with my game Raptor! RUN!!!. It is far from perfect, the collision detection goes awry at times, and using the down-button to jump feel cucumbersome. But it's done!

I also just made Quite Authentic Console but that wasn't a jam.

I won ? place in a Halloween flash fiction jam on the topic "It Hit the floor with a Thud". Here's my stories, the last one is the one I participated with.

I've just played Interminal, initial impression is the game managed to capture the liminal feels of waiting in an airport when your flight is still hours away.

    Spoiler thoughts:

Some of the perfume description is weirdly specific and I assume that's for comedic effect but just in case can someone confirm if that's how some perfumes actually smell like? Like there are ones that smell like armpit or postman's bags. Surely real perfumes are not that horrible right?

The airport seems to be an infinite loop, I tried running to the end but couldn't reach it. It's a shame there's not a way to go to the ground floor.

Is there any secrets? As far as I can tell you just smell perfumes, watch planes go by and the boarding information occasionally changes. Don't want to miss out on secrets.

Haven't played Anger Foot yet but I remember having seen the trailer for the official game before. Maybe I need to start checking whenever a new game is announced if it has a jam version to try out as demo.

This is how I feel all the time because I have a weak sense of smell. People will describe complex combinations of smells and I have no idea what they talking about.

I agree. I kept looking for a way down. Its pretty clear this game is trying to tap into the more surrealist aspects of the liminal space aesthetic to create a dream sequence.

      Is there any secrets?

Not that I am aware of. If you look at its install size the game is quite tiny so I doubt there could be anything huge. One player in the comments of that game page had a graphical bug which radically altered the way the game looks if that counts.

start checking whenever a new game is announced if it has a jam version to try out as demo

I like to support developers who do commercial releases of these games so I will always try and point out if one of these games has gone on to have a commercial release and if I forget I would appreciate if someone mentions it in the comments.

That's a very aesthetic looking bug, I'll take it!
