Description:

Team Reptile brings you Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a future world from the mind of Dion Koster where self-styled graffiti crews equipped with personal boostpacks are battling each other for control of the streets. Start your own cypher and dance, paint graffiti, collect beats, combo your tricks and face off with the cops to stake your claim to the sprawling metropolis of New Amsterdam.

(What the official description won’t say is that this game is an unofficial love letter to Jet Set Radio on the Dreamcast and Jet Set Radio Future on the Xbox. Hideki Naganuma even contributed new songs to the soundtrack.)

I grew up playing (and replaying) Jet Set Radio on my Dreamcast. I bought an Xbox 360 almost entirely so I could play Jet Set Radio Future.

I’ve put an hour into Bomb Rush Cyberfunk so far, and I couldn’t be happier. It honestly feels like an official sequel. The game nails the art, music, and overall vibe of the JSR series. Despite being a brand new game, it feels intimately familiar to me already.

It’s way too soon for me to give full conclusions as I’m only just now finishing the game’s protracted tutorial and introduction. I’m just chiming in here now to say that, thus far, in my initial impressions, it’s meeting the high bar that the other JSR games set (and I’m saying that as someone who holds those in very high esteem).

EDIT: Two things I forgot to mention:

    1. The game’s movement feels great.
    2. It runs perfectly on the Steam Deck.

JGR was just one of the many reasons why having a Dreamcast back in the day was a defining time in gaming for me and while I'm well aware that it's not possible to climb back into the nostalgia womb, I do look forward to giving this love letter title a chance to make me feel 18 again.

So excited for this game! I love how all of us Jet Set Radio fans are emerging out of the woodwork to answer the call. 😂 This interview with the Game Director gave insight to the dev's inspiration and game design choices. It sounds like there was an effort to modernize the genre, since they know they will inevitably be compared to JSR and Tony Hawk's games.

Just an absolute banger, can't say that enough, the game is so fun, stylish and has so much soul. First game in a long, long while that gave me that feeling of childhood excitement! Easily my favorite game of the year thus far.

I'm really glad this game turned out this good, because all the JSR clones that came before were missing something or other, this is the first one that truly captures the look and feel to a tee. And yeah, the soundtrack is amazing.

This is probably a silly question, but how similar is Bomb Rush Cyberfunk to Hi-Fi Rush? I'm interested now that I saw this post, because otherwise I would have overlooked this game, or at best, kept it on my backlog way below the other game. I haven't played any of the aforementioned games yet, although I own a copy of Jet Set Radio and am more interested in playing that one now.

They're like cousins. Both are made by teams that love stylized art, amazing music, and well-tuned action gameplay. Mechanically, they're completely different games, but the vibes are similar. There's an energy that smaller, focused 3d action experiences have that sort of faded out with the PS2 and XBOX, and both games bring it back hard.

Hi-Fi Rush is more polished and expensive looking, and great if you like character action games like bayonetta, metal gear rising, or devil may cry.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is great if you want something closer to a tony hawk pro skater sort of roam around action game. Doing tricks and exploring, vibing to awesome music.

Ooh, parkour exploration sounds up my alley. I really enjoyed Mirror's Edge, the second one at least, don't remember the first.
