However, I'm not sure about the combat mechanics based on this video. The lack of impact from the hits makes it seem like it might not be very satisfying, which is important for a game like this. Additionally, I personally find long boss fights with the predictable pattern of "dash three times to avoid the boss's attack, get a couple of hits in, repeat" to be a bit boring.

Of course, it's hard to say for sure based on just a short video. I hope I'm wrong and that the combat is more satisfying than it appears.

First I'm hearing of it, and straight away wish-listing. Looks amazing. The Sun Wukong story in a souls-like format just seems such an obviously great pairing when you think about it

I think of the souls series as a serious and dark world where one mistep means death.

I don't think of the two as a pairing I'd ever expect, but I love both media so I'll give it a whirl.

I've only played Demons' of the Souls series, and while definitely dark, I don't see it as particularly serious. All the NPCs chew the scenery, the regular enemies' movements and soundsets are all a bit hammy. The opening cinematic is delightfully over the top. It's not quite parody of the High Fantasy genre, but there's a tongue firmly in a cheek.

That's where I see some degree of tonal overlap with Sun Wukong, and I'm very much here for it.

The translation is silly and there's some Japanese culture that doesn't translate the seriousness, but Demon's Soul is definitely a dark fantasy game.

Miyazaki is on record saying it's inspired by Berserk, the quintessential dark fantasy.
