Yeah, I get taking inspiration from something, specially games. But from what I see in the page, this project is basically a modernized Pokémon targeting the nostalgia of the old pokemon fanbase. I’d totally be one of those people happy to try it, so I hope Nintendo lets this slide (hard to believe considering how aggressive they are with their cease and desists)

The few videos that I watched were very, almost unnecessarily, alarmist with little foundation. It seems like they're more worried about instilling fear than reporting the problem. The not-so-subtle message between the lines always tends to be something like: "hey look how bad immigrants are having in Europe, do yourself a favor and don't come".

Their reach is also quite impressive. I get countless messages from family and friends asking if everything is okay because of DW's videos.

It's the solo work from Gene Louis, and yes, it's available!

This song in particular has a very special place in my heart because at the time I wasn't fluent in english, and I remember trying to transcribe the lyrics by myself. I even emailed what I believed to be his email address asking for the lyrics for the song, but with no luck.

Years later I started guitar classes, and I revisited this song again with my teacher to learn the chord progression and how to play it (still couldn't sing it!).

Only a couple of weeks after I had moved to Dublin, I went to the show of his band Bullets and Octane. I was used to shows starting very late where I'm from, so I arrived late and missed the gig! No chance to ask for the lyrics there again!

Now with this archive available, I once again got a chance to give it another listen -- and realise how far my english skills have come, I could understand almost the whole thing. I got an AI to transcribe the tricky bits, but I can finally play and sing the correct words.

As someone who learned english through music and games (thanks in part to this song), I feel a strong connection to some songs even though they aren't necessarily great.

Every now and then I'd go back to some semi-dead MySpace just to listen to his stuff, until it eventually went away. Seeing this just took me on a nostalgia trip, and I’m so happy you shared it. Thank you!

I can say I don't feel strongly about them one way or another. I enjoy Ghost, specifically I appreciate their awesome live performances (also how I came across them in the first place, and have been to 3 in total since). I also like them because of the whole "against the grain" act, as they are essentially a satanistic pop heavy metal. They don't really have any heavy songs other than maybe Mummy Dust? and that's okay with me because I don't listen to heavy metal much.

I played through this game in a single session on my SteamDeck during a long overnight flight (sorry for the sudden screen flashes to the person sitting next to me). It’s a great story-driven experience. The gameplay primarily involves walking from side to side and following cutscenes, which made it feel more like watching a movie than playing a game, and I enjoyed that.

I typically avoid horror games/movies, but I made an exception for Mouthwashing based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews, and I don’t regret it. The game focuses on psychological horror and a disturbing atmosphere, rather than relying on jump scares (though there are a few).

While the story may not be entirely original, it has some very interesting nuances, and it's possible to make connections based on subtle details and assumptions. I particularly appreciated the level of detail in the environment and the consistent, sarcastic tone that carries the narrative from start to finish.

For a while now, I’ve had this itch to dive deeper into the world of Ska. It’s one of those genres I’ve always known about, due to my connection with Punk Rock, but never really knew. Last weekend, fate decided to give me a little nudge. I was wandering through a flea market, when I stumbled on "Wha’ppen" by The Beat. It was a completely random pick, I had no idea what I was holding. But as I stared at the cover, a guy nearby noticed. He turned out to be a walking encyclopedia of Ska history. We ended up chatting and he gave me a lot of context around the evolution of Ska, and by the end of it, I really felt like it was time to listen to it with more attention.

So I asked an AI to suggest a Ska "timeline", and this week I immersed myself in the sounds of each era:

    • First Wave: The Skatalites’ Foundation Ska .
    • Second Wave: The Specials’ self-titled album .
    • Third Wave: Reel Big Fish’s Turn the Radio Off .
    • Modern Ska: The Interrupters’ Fight the Good Fight.

The first and second wave albums were good, and helped me understand where Ska came from. That said, I’ll admit I found them a bit repetitive at times. Maybe it’s the albums I picked, or maybe it’s just the nature of the genre. Either way, I’m glad I listened.

As a long-time punk rock fan, I was already familiar with Reel Big Fish and The Interrupters. I've actually seen the latter live a couple of times, and their energy is really infectious.

Next on my list for classic, foundational Ska are Madness and Desmond Dekker. If anyone has recommendations beyond those, I’m all ears!

What does your workflow look like? Do you use default settings?

I use TST on Firefox but I had issues adapting to the, what seemed to me, arbitrary nesting of tabs. I ended up turning it off. So now I use it mostly because I prefer vertical tabs (my monitor is huge).

My current workflow isn't great either so I'm always looking for ways to improve, and I'd love to understand how to use those features better.

I beta tested it for a few weeks. I love the features such as timelines integration with steam API, can't wait until more and more games start making use of it.

Unfortunately as of now it doesn't work very well on Linux for me. I experienced a few bugs that make it (quite literally) unusable for me, such as when the interface hogs down to a halt.

I wasn't aware of the launch, so hopefully those things have improved.

It seems that the target audience for writing MediaWiki code is a niche, and already quite different from the one proposed in the original post. A non-tech person might not even know that they want to write mediawiki, and the fact that they get there makes them a totally different audience to begin with.

You mentioned that creating a directory as the first step isn't ideal. I had a look at page you referenced, I noticed that its first step is:

    Step 1
HTML elements have an opening and closing tag with content in between.

I haven't read the rest of either guides, but based on this initial step alone, I believe that someone without technical experience (like my mom) might find it more confusing than "create a directory".

Freecodecamp looks like an amazing resource, but it seems like there's an assumed level of knowledge that some may find trivial, others not. That's why I think different resources serves different people.

Not the person you're replying to, but my general feeling towards discord is that of a person that has given up. I declared privacy bankruptcy as soon as I used discord to chat. I made peace with that and I treat everything that I put there as public (much like I do with Tildes, for example).

I move my business elsewhere for business I care about. I know it's not the best mindset but to be fair there's nothing they could change to regain my trust. I just wish less people used it as a central point of contact.

Me, personally, could never stop caring. It's so damn important. I'll never stop caring about the things I believe in, and I, too, become more engaged the older I get, as I realize how much more important it is. I wouldn't be happier by choosing to stay ignorant to what's going on in the world, I'd be miserable.

Escape+. (Press escape then full stop)

This populates your command with the latest argument from the last command used. I find it extremely useful, for example:

    ll /tmp/mydir
    cat <hotkey>
    It then becomes: cat /tmp/mydir
    Then I just continue typing

Did you use AI to help write your exemplary analysis? If so, I'd be very interested in understanding your process.

Off-topic: I initially took the article at face value and felt it resonated deeply with what I've been seeing and thinking, even though I couldn't express it as eloquently. Then, as is customary on Tildes, someone with a lot of expertise, like yourself, breaks down the original, offers more information, points out inconsistencies, and blows my mind because I thought the original was already an unbeatable masterpiece.

It's unreal to me the lengths people will go to defend giga corporations that will do everything in their power to profit, no matter how evil or unethical those practices are. They couldn't care less about any individual person, and they're certainly not doing anyone a favour as some people try to imply.

They will steal yours and everyone else's data without consent, they will train AIs on stolen content, they will purposely ruin the internet experience for thousands of people who aren't and won't ever be their customers. They will do everything they can to strangle the competition and any other player, big or small, that would arise, so that they become the only real option in the market. It's not a consumer's choice. They're not playing a fair and even game. We should collectively stop inferring that it is.
