I didn't realize 1.0 hasn't been released prior. The work they have done on this project is pretty great.

I would love to play this with the recreated engine, but anytime I've tried, I quickly get motion sickness. I'd love to know if anyone else had that problem and found a way to solve it!

I did try those, with no result. The game doesn't have some other settings I usually change in other games to prevent motion sickness. Morrowind is one of my favorite games, and wish I could try...

I first tried the demo out way back in 96 and was entranced and ever since then meant to get back to it and give it a proper go. I finally did early last year and ended-up putting about 30 hours in DFU here with some mods and honestly, it's like a tech demo for what was to come in The Elder Scrolls.

It's a huge world, but largely empty and there's no real incentive to explore, you're not going to find anything interesting.

There are heaps of villages, cities and towns, but they all look the same, inside and out and all have the same few types of shops, temples, etc.

Dungeons are interesting and the main port of call for Daggerfall, but ultimately, they end-up largely being pretty samey. I did both of styles of dungeons, which is to say, the original style--which are enormous and mazelike, easy to get lost in, often having lots of random things you need to do to progress (Click on this random skull in a random corner to be teleported to the final section of the dungeon where your quest is. But you have no idea that you need to do this, because it looks the same as all the other skulls and nothing tells you you need to do this)--and the Smaller Dungeons option, which massively cuts down their scale, but makes them less nonsensical and easier to get in and out of, but still huge. Again, there's not a lot done with this space and you'll largely encounter the same building blocks in dungeons over and over again.

You really need to "make your own fun" and get up in your head a little bit, making up your own roleplay as you go, the game does not give you a lot to work with. If you've played Stellaris and you're into the roleplay aspect of that, you may have fun with Daggerfall, but for me, I need a little more direction and some more story. Tell me what I ought to be doing and what story threads I should follow, rather than having me have to make up my own story in my head.

I'm not trying to shit on the game here. Daggerfall still holds a very special place in my heart and I love it very much and enjoyed the time I spent with it both as a teenager and as an adult now, but I'm trying to be realistic about it and what it is in a modern context.

Forgot to say: Do you like fast travel? I hope you like fast travel. Daggerfall is entirely built around it and while you can actually walk to different places, there's no reason to (again, nothing to see, everything is empty). I did download a mod that allowed you to travel the roads automatically to whatever new places you wanted to go and speed up time while you did it, which was fun, but again ultimately pretty hollow. While I liked Starfield, Daggerfall is just as lousy with fast travel and mechanically, isn't any different from how Starfield does it.

It's really cool to see open source improvements to old games. Massive props to the developers for creating something like this completely for free. Will give this a shot and report back.

I spent enough time in the original game that would be sufficient to finish most RPGs of that era, but never completed (or even came close to completing)the main storyline, due to the vast number of intricate side quests. Some of my fondest gaming memories!
