I don't know the full story of this guy, but with how the article paints the story, I just feel bad for him. Of course what he was participating in is an illegal activity, but it seems wrong to permanently handicap his financials when he already went to jail for the crime and now has his job prospects permanently fucked up. He has basically no chance at getting back on track and all over some pirated video games.

I think I mostly indirectly feel bad for him. It's not like he shouldn't be punished, but you see all the murder or assault that just slides through or gets a slap on the wrist, and then this person gets charged millions and the threat of over 3 years in prison over pirating video games. You just wonder what this "justice system" is really doing.

Another good argument for charges and fines being proportional to that subject's net worth btw. Even a decent 6 figures job for a full career would never be able to fully pay off such a debt. And it's not like Nintendo needs the money ($14m is very roughly 300k copies of a game, less since Nintendo owns the platform).

Yeah, I think that's what bothers me the most. The dude broke the law, but the punishment is WAY out of proportion to what he did. I can't imagine just permanently having 30% of your income gone...

Yeah, I think that's what bothers me the most. The dude broke the law, but the punishment is WAY out of proportion to what he did. I can't imagine just permanently having 30% of your income gone and having to pay a company that won't even notice the repayments. It's just sad how much the justice system in the US seeks to punish instead of seek actual justice. They fucked up his life enough with making him a felon, it feels like that's enough in this case (and still probably overkill tbh).

The article isn't telling the full story of his involvement, at least as I recall it. His connection to Team Xecuter is more complicated than he claims. They broke the golden rule of piracy -- don't make money off of it. They weren't just hosting a ROM site, they were selling full hardware and software solutions for Switch piracy for profit plus subscription services. They weren't the ones driving the discoveries in Switch hacking either and their product was essentially within their own walled garden of Switch piracy.

To be clear, I still think there's been a gross miscarriage of justice in this case and what has been done to this man is unconscionable. The story is just more nuanced than the article describes in some important aspects. It still has value in following up and actually interviewing the guy.

I remember programming and installing PIC chips for the original Sony PlayStation, pirating the games and patching them. Yeah, I definitely sailed the seas back in those days, but it wasn't for profit, it was for fun and because I could. Being in IT now is probably due a lot to how I was as a teen, following guides, soldering chips, building PCs, circumventing copy protection techniques. It was all so much fun back in the day.

Now I spend all my time keep bad actors out of the company that I work for. Oh how the tables have turned.

No need to apologize! ~misc is meant for exactly what you've done, put something that doesn't fit elsewhere. If there is a good spot for it, one of us that can move topics will do so. Interesting...
