I apologize. Even though Retrobat is not technically a front-end, it is a front-end for all practical purposes. It is not a script that you run on an already existing EmulationStation install, but rather a complete program that employs EmulationStation as one of its tools. At no point is the user required to interact with EmulationStation without the mediation of Retrobat's tools and defaults.
Very relatable, OP. With me it's so bad that I don't think I can ever truly relax.
