I've "played" since about 2007. In reality I probably only have about 200 or 300 hours in the game. I've been on and off of it many times over the years. Generally I've just had a hard time making space for it in my life, as unlike many of my friends I've never really wanted to commit to a "raid schedule" for MMOs. Besides that, I just haven't had enough free time to throw at it to get really involved regularly with larger fleet actions or corporations. I've been a member of a few but mostly in a passive capacity.
It's a really cool game, and I'm weird enough to have fun playing it solo I guess, but I find it difficult to make time for it.

I get you, I had the same opinion for a while as someone who lived in low-sec, and school meant I could only play less and less. However, I recently joined up with a larger alliance that post OP schedules a few days ahead which to me is actually terrific, because now I can plan my day in advanced around those 2-3 hour events and have a good bit of fun out of it.
Never played but wondered, what's the appeal of EVE? Browsed the reddit page and it seems to have an interesting following but didn't seem very clear on what it was other than some MMO.

So I've been playing eve online for 10 years and one of the most important things to realize about eve is that this trailer( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq2oxt7Nrxo ) is so true. Its been quite a ride, and every person playing has a very different story. Because of its nature, it has also been the subject of many ethnography papers in the disciplines of sociology and game studies. You can think of the game as sort of a petri dish of social interactions, culture, and history. I also just love playing the game. Here is a video of what originally got me into eve: https://youtu.be/RMFahR4wXTg

And here is a piece of academia written about the game: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1555412014558089
Interesting. Seems fairly complicated and has a lot of buttons :l
