Dwarf Fortress is an interesting game, because while there's a certain charm to its ascii characters, it requires such an investment to get a hang of it. I'm starting to believe they're never going to actually deal with the graphics because Tarn? Tay? is simply not interested in doing that kind of stuff.

It's not a bad route to take imho since they make it easy enough to integrate outside tools for those of us who actually want to know what is going on onscreen :)

I used the guide when I was getting back into the game a few months ago and it had me up and going in no time.

I stopped playing when barrows were introduced because I couldn't figure them out. Also, I hated that they got rid of surface lava and made all lava lead to hell. No more magma forges.

      I have two counterpoints:

      1. Z levels may have made the game less game-like, but it helps for realism and especially Adventure Mode.
      2. People still often use magma forges, but they just require more planning and less rushing. An example to make it more efficient might be a minecart system, either pushed by dwarves or power.
