I remember when CK2 added India as a region. It was giant with many provinces and characters. Only there wasn't much of interesting added there that makes you want to play in the region. So then you had a giant portion of the map, which you mostly ignored.

At the same time, the game became much much slower afterwards, due to the large amount of characters that were added.

Maybe it'll be different this time. Maybe CK3 is more optimised or maybe they add some actual content in the new regions that is worth playing. But otherwise you may need to upgrade your PC to the exact same game you would be playing before.

My understanding is that they've implemented much more aggressive insignificant AI character culling to help forestall the issue. Between that, and new models of rulership, It seems like there will be reasons to play in the new area. I'm stoked both for a distinct model of nomadic life, and also a tier above Emperor. As the world has grown, it's been impossible to manage dozens of kings. There's plenty of empires in the world to consume all of my vassal cap.

Performance-wise, I wouldn't be super worried about it. CK3 isn't completely free of performance issues especially the longer into the game you go, but it's been pretty solid and stable throughout its life cycle in my experience. CK3 already included India from launch, though there is still the problem of that area of the map not having enough unique gameplay going for it. That said, the fact that a Steppe-focused update is coming alongside the map extension makes me way more hopeful on that front -- focusing on adding unique gameplay elements to the nearby geographic regions already on the map that could really use fleshing-out gameplay-wise is a good thing to do before adding China, and it makes me hopeful for the whole thing.
