I was surprised to learn they already had a PC release in 2003, in Japan and Europe, according to Wikipedia.
GOG partnered with Capcom to do this updated PC release after the game received 23000+ votes on the GOG Dreamlist.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I remember back in the PS1 days a friend raving about Breath of Fire III and I wanted to play that game so bad but could never find it in stock anywhere. Not knowing anything else about the series, to my great surprise I eventually found out they had made a 4th one when I came across it in my local game shop, and, though it was not the one I originally had my heart set on, I picked it up anyway, and sure enough it wound up becoming one of my favourite JRPGs from that golden era.
