It's the new trendy multiplayer game style. Hunt and Tarkov are the two biggest (and probably oldest) examples of it. The upcoming Marathon game is an example of an upcoming big budget entry.

It just blows my mind how easy it would be to take titanfalll 2, throw together some really dynamic single player content that gives players an excuse to run on walls and try different mechs while not punishing them if they're bad, and make TONS of money. The single player in titanfall 2 is already great, and could be so much better if it allowed just a little more freedom. Some "free form training mode" or whatever that lets you use all the items that never make the main game and has courses just as designed for crazy movement.
It's funny though as I've been having the itch to play again ever since I stumbled across BLKOUT for my friends. Titanfall inspired table top wargame that isn't hellishly expensive (compared to others in its genre, about 60-100 for an "army), easy to setup, quick to play, and has cool pilots and mechs.
I've been crushing titanfall 2 content for the last week wondering if i should play through again and maybe even try to not be awful at the multiplayer, and then heard they might be making a new one, and now poof, they drop the ball again.

So my read on this is that EA was using an intellectual property that people loved to chase a recent market trend.
I feel like this sounds close enough to describing Apex Legends too, as Fortnite and PUBG style games were taking off around that time. I believe Apex Legends has made them pretty significant chunks of money so I’m not surprised if they’ve decided that’s the formula going forward — take the titanfall universe and make a new shooter in whatever gameplay style is currently trending
Yeah, I was going to say, Apex is the exact same thing. I haven't really played Apex since before they even introduced seasons but it was a super fun game to me, so I probably would've checked out...

I haven't really played Apex since before they even introduced seasons but it was a super fun game to me, so I probably would've checked out this R7 game. Titanfall (and Apex) movement is 2nd only to Team Fortress 2 (the real TF2 :) ) in terms of how sick it is (imo).
I’m sorry to hear about the layoffs. That’s hundreds of individual lives that are potentially ruined. I’m also sorry to hear that gamers won’t be able to experience a new Titanfall game anytime...

What I’m not sorry about, is that EA is doing bad. The upper management and the shareholders have failed their employees and their customers.

Titanfall 2 bombed sales-wise, so I’d imagine there’s not much inherent hope in a traditional sequel selling well.
Although it also got sabotaged by its own publisher and released right next to a CoD if i recall correctly.
