I'm personally pretty excited for the new Catholicism stuff, it seems like it has the potential to be pretty interesting.

But for real this religion update has been a long time coming. Glad theocracies will be playable, that's been something that people have been asking for pretty much since release. Interesting to see how it goes, especially if you can play as other theocracies instead of just Christian ones.

Well the big reworks won't be until later in the year, so we'll both have time to recover from our recent CK3 binges :p

I believe that outside of Christianity there wasn't a religion in that time period that had a singular extra-national religious authority? There were plenty of countries that claimed divine status for their ruler and determined particular rites for their country, but I don't think their claims to have the singular Truth such that everyone else should obey them were respected beyond their borders.

True (though I don't know enough about Eastern religions to know if that was also the case there). I just meant that it would be cool to play as a theocracy other than a Christian one. Like not even as the head of faith, just as an alternative to feudal/clan/tribal/administrative. Even if they aren't there at the game start, would be interesting to be able to form them, maybe with a tenet of a new religion you create, or maybe as an elective succession type so that your heir isn't someone of your dynasty but instead another high-learning vassal or something. Idk, it just sounds pretty fun and different.

Totally. That's basically how merchant republics ended up working in CK2, and I would love to see more of that sort of thing. You could kind of do that now with a religious adventurer, but it would be nice to have some formal mechanics for preaching/converting and supporting your new religion as it grows.

EDIT: This is what I get for focusing on the first of the two DLC in this chapter: Merchant Republics, coming in Q4. Makes sense that they'd want to get all of the alternate forms of government going right at the same time.
