It was a long time coming, but man, without D3 in the works, it means they've put all their eggs in the Marathon basket. I'm not a business person, but that currently seems like a terribly risky idea.

I don't even think they've put their eggs in marathon. Sony are just cutting their losses at this point: https://bsky.app/profile/jasonschreier.bsky.social/post/3mmfkf3v63c2t

What a terrible purchase from Sony this has been for all parties involved. I hope there's a book one day detailing how Bungie mismanaged itself into annihilation.

This gives me some complicated feelings. I stopped playing a couple years ago when it started to feel like an increasingly demanding game, and watched as bungie really struggled to keep an audience after removing the first half of their story (how on earth were players meant to get into the plot after that!?). On the other hand, the end of seasonal content might make returning to play the expansions I missed more forgiving without having to constantly keep up with the increasing level cap.

End of an era :(
I haven’t played much since the first couple weeks of Renegades, but I honestly might hop back in for this update, as they’re cleaning up some of the mess, putting the director back front and center, and adding some new activities and abilities. It looks like they’re trying their best to put the game in a decent state before updates go dark.
Honestly, I think this is a preferable end to putting out half baked updates and further ruining the game. If there is to be more destiny, let it be another new game in at least 5 years time. For now, I’ll be happy to run a few vanguard ops or dungeons with friends to hopefully leave the game on some happy memories. It feels like I might get a chance to say a proper goodbye to the game now instead of quitting out of frustration.
I hope, at least, that this will allow Bungie to "settle" the game and its expansions. I'd like to play Destiny 2, but their godawful scheme of deleting previous paid content makes it a...

They probably won't delete any more content now, but with no dev team to port the deleted content (especially pre-BL content) I wouldn't count on it coming back. Theoretically BL-TFS seasons...

Theoretically BL-TFS seasons should be compatible but if they're even shutting down the rotation of seasonal events, I can't see them bringing seasonal stories back

And maybe make it available on Linux, too.
