Being myself a fan of the serie, having one of my favorites videogame essayist also become obsessed with the series is very validating. Who knew those dumb plane games could be so awesome?

He also mirrors my progression in term of hardware : first gamepad, then VR, then HOTAS. But I was more reasonable than him and took the consumer version made for PS4 instead of his flight sim gear.

This also made me realize that "I sexually identify as an attack helicopter" is not just a stinky meme but a real and interesting short story.

I haven't played Ace Combat, but did get heavily into Elite Dangerous when it re-released and he's not wrong about the connectedness of using a HOTAS. Even without VR its something quite different from most of what we do when we play video games. It just feels right in a way that controllers and keyboards and mice don't always achieve.

It was a good watch and inspired a bit of nostalgia. I may have to dig out my setup and give it another run with Project Wingman and AC. Maybe this will be what finally pushes me to dive into getting my own VR setup.
