What will likely be lost on people who read this: most disorders like this are classified based on severity of how it impairs the rest of their life - someone who chooses to game instead of eating or going to the bathroom is of sufficient severity; however, someone who chooses to game instead of attending a social gathering that they didn't really want to go to is probably not.

You see this often with diagnoses that are somewhat rare and yet seemingly affect many individuals (self-diagnosed) like depression, BDD, ADHD, OCD, autism spectrum disorders (namely what used to be classified as Asperger's), etc.

I am of course, not attempting to make light of what can be a serious disorder - some people have died because gaming took precedence over essential bodily functions like eating, drinking, and waste disposal. I am merely commenting as someone who enjoys gaming as a hobby and am not looking forward to people accusing me of having a disorder, or attempting to have an "intervention" based on this new classification.

From what I'm reading on gaming sites, gamers are more aware of this and more relaxed about it than they used to. It's not an "attack on gaming" and it's not "clueless people hating on gamers"....

It's so easy to define these addiction disorders by saying "if it affects your life negatively, if you want to quit but you can't... it's bad". You're a happy gamer who spends a ton of time on your favorite game but have no trouble taking care of your basic needs? Then it's okay. I think the time when self-declared "experts" blamed school shootings on Counter-Strike is past us. This is for people whose life literally falls apart while they distract themselves with some Korean MMO 24/7.

I'm not saying it's an attack on gamers and in general I welcome this as it draws attention to a true mental disorder. As you stated: The point of my post was more to vent, because I've already...

The point of my post was more to vent, because I've already had someone close to me bring this up as a jab at my gaming habits because I could be paying more attention to them instead of gaming.

I'm positive this won't be my only negative interaction with this new piece of data and I worry that pundits will use it as fuel to bring back the whole gaming = school shooters or whatever nonsense they can do to fuel fear and draw ratings.

I think this is more a problem with self control and addiction to things which could be anything that makes you feel good and not specifically videogames. They're just the particular vice in this...

I think this is more a problem with self control and addiction to things which could be anything that makes you feel good and not specifically videogames. They're just the particular vice in this instance. Could be alcohol, drugs, food, sleep, etc. So, yeah, definitely a self control issue.
